The AI Boom vs. The Blue Ridge: Why Western North Carolina Must Draw the Line

Artificial Intelligence is marching forward as an undeniable force. From healthcare breakthroughs to global logistics, the digital revolution is reshaping our economy at a breath-taking pace. We are told by tech giants and developers that this future is inevitable—that massive infrastructure must be built, and that communities simply have to adapt.
But here in Western North Carolina, a vital question is being asked across kitchen tables, town councils, and community meetings:
At what cost?
The narrative that we must sacrifice our natural resources to power the future is a false choice. We can embrace technological evolution without turning our mountain sanctuaries into industrial sacrifice zones.
The True Cost to Our Mountains
Big Tech’s rush to build hyper-scale data centers is running head-on into the ecological realities of the Blue Ridge. These facilities are ravenous, requiring continuous power and massive volumes of water for cooling systems.
The Water Crisis: Traditional cooling methods draw heavily from local municipal or watershed supplies, pumping millions of gallons of water daily through facilities only to release it at much higher temperatures. In a region where clean, pristine mountain water is our most precious community asset—and where droughts and weather extremes test our infrastructure—diverting millions of gallons to cool servers is unsustainable.
The Viewscapes and Way of Life: Western North Carolina’s breathtaking views, rolling ridges, and quiet rural communities are the bedrock of our local identity and economy. Massive, windowless server warehouses surrounded by high security fences, humming with relentless industrial noise, and crisscrossed by high-voltage transmission lines fundamentally shatter that landscape.

We shouldn't have to trade our clean air, pure water, and iconic horizons so that servers halfway across the country can process queries a fraction of a second faster.
Is There Another Way?
Yes. The truth is that data center design is evolving, but tech companies will only innovate if they are forced to do so by strong local boundaries.
Closed-Loop and Waterless Cooling: Technology exists to cool servers using closed-loop systems, air cooling, or non-potable reclaimed water. If tech giants want to build data centers, they should be legally mandated to use zero local drinking water.
True Renewable Integration: Instead of leaning on local grids that force everyday residents to foot the bill for grid upgrades, data centers should be required to entirely self-fund dedicated, localized renewable energy microgrids (such as isolated solar and wind arrays with storage) rather than draining shared community power.
So, Where Should They Go?
If AI is inevitable, where do we put these massive facilities without crushing the lives of the people who live nearby?
The answer lies in reimagining where and how we build industrial digital infrastructure: (these are just ideas and there are also lots of this then that about these ideas)
Industrial Redevelopment: Instead of carving up pristine mountain acreage or rural farmland, maybe data centers should be restricted to repurposed industrial brownfield sites—abandoned factories, derelict manufacturing plants, or old coal-plant sites that already possess heavy industrial zoning and robust grid connections.
Subterranean and Northern Climates: Utilizing abandoned mines or cold-weather northern regions allows natural ambient air cooling to drastically reduce or eliminate the need for water-intensive evaporative cooling towers.
Protecting What We Love
Western North Carolina is more than just cheap, available land on a developer’s map. It is a home, a fragile ecosystem, and a community built on a deep respect for the land.
Saying "no" to data centers in our mountains isn't standing against the future—it's standing up for common sense. It’s telling Big Tech that innovation cannot come at the expense of our precious mountain water and our irreplaceable way of life. The future of AI can be built, but it belongs where it doesn't break the earth to do it.
